Comrade Trump and his Commissars

From Just sayin’…by George Duncan

Comrade Trump and his Commissars

I had just finished watching the season finale of Homeland with the image of Clair Dane viewing the Capitol Building – the scene of her next mission – from a distance when I clicked over to The Rachel Maddow Show, already in progress, and was immediately struck by how similar the two scenarios were. How closely facts in the Trump White House follow fiction, and recalling how often columnists and commentators will exclaim, “You can’t make this stuff up!”

It’s been noted pretty much from day one how firmly Trump leans towards those who were most supportive during the campaign, often preferring loyalty over experience or competence in assigning roles. But more recent activities indicate it goes well beyond that as he surrounds himself with sycophants and people who will reflect back his constant need for adulation and assurance. Hence, a cabinet staffed by fellow billionaires, lobbyists, and generals without regard to their near total lack of government experience. “Drain the swamp” my foot!

It appears to me that the thin-skinned, paranoid Trump wants no one around him who might challenge his knee-jerk opinions, especially of himself. The most trusted, of course, as we learned in The Godfather, is family. Thus son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka are given West Wing offices.

To further insure unchallenged compliance throughout his administration, the Washington Post reports that Trump “has installed political operatives to watch over and “advise” cabinet secretaries and their departments,” much as Stalin installed similar “commissars” throughout his government to insure strict obedience to the party.

Says the Post:

Most members of President Trump’s Cabinet do not yet have leadership teams in place or even nominees for top deputies. But they do have an influential coterie of senior aides installed by the White House who are charged — above all— with monitoring the secretaries’ loyalty, according to eight officials in and outside the administration.

This shadow government of political appointees with the title of senior White House adviser is embedded at every Cabinet agency, with offices in or just outside the secretary’s suite. The White House has installed at least 16 of the advisers at departments including Energy and Health and Human Services and at some smaller agencies such as NASA, according to records first obtained by ProPublica through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Now, on top of that move, the Administration has announced that the visitor logs at the White House and Mar-a-Lago will be kept confidential, so the American people will have no idea who Trump is talking to, what kinds of wheeler-dealers are coming and going, what foreign countries are visiting the Oval Office, etc. And, of course, Trump’s tax returns remain unavailable, still hiding behind the phony excuse that they are under audit. Which, the IRS assures us, means nothing with regard to sharing them with the American people.
